Around noon today, I heard a very loud staccato bird call, just in front of the snack bar at Ft. Zachary Taylor. I turned to look, thinking "pileated woodpecker" , but feeling very confused...we don't even have flickers down here, much less the pileated !...it was a really odd feeling, but there he was, about 60' away, in an Australian Pine !...he looked HUGE (especially compared to a Palm Warbler ! ), and we all (4) looked at him for about 2 minutes, through 8 X 40 binoculars. He flew off aways, called again, then left towards the north east , flashing his large white underwing patches. It was a tremendous thrill !
