This morning I birded Matheson with a couple of friends. We started at the picnic area and then headed to the eastern side of the park in search of the Red-headed Woodpecker, which we were able to see.
In the picnic area some highlights were 3 Swallow-tailed Kites and 3 Broad-winged Hawks soaring overhead. One of the kites would come down and snatch ball-shaped air plants off trees and fly around tearing it apart, probably looking for a snack. Several Downy Woodpeckers were hanging out with the Red-bellied Woodpeckers. Other birds seen in the live oaks were Blue-headed Vireo, N. Parula, Black-throated Green Warbler (male), Palm Warbler and Black-and-white Warbler. The usual exotics were present and noisy: Yellow-chevroned Parakeet, Orange-winged Parrot and Hill Mynas.
We crossed Old Cutler and headed to the eastern part of the park. We found the Red-headed Woodpecker at the usual place by the police officer's home. Also on the eastern side were Kestrel, Osprey, more Hill Mynas (seem to be nesting), Eastern Phoebe, all blue male Indigo Bunting, Prairie Warbler and several Gray Catbirds. A highlight was a Swainson's Warbler hanging out with a Worm-eating Warbler.
