A visit to Everglades National Park today revealed no new owl activity at the coe visitor center-ie mom did not pay a midday visit, but a drive to Pa hay okee produced a chamber of commerce worthy appearance of the adult barred owls, and a cameo from their chick. On arrival we found the nest quiet and no sign of either parent-but within 15 minutes, while we took in the view from the overlook, we heard the hooting of one of the adults-and found him/her in a small tree on the boardwalk being mobbed by crows in the branches above. I missed the flight shots when he/she flew into the tree next to the nest-where she hooted and posed 10-15 feet above ground for as many as a dozen onlookers, while the mate-who remained unseen during our visit, called from a nearby clump of trees. The stereophonic calls of its parents induced the chick to sit up, and a portrait or two was obtained.Back at Royal Palm a great blue heron put on an oscar worthy performance spearing, beating and then swallowing an apparently oversized (what else?) oscar.
