Hi all.

Traveled down to the L31W canal today for the first time to try to catch up with some of the recent birds reported from there, most recently by Carlos.

Set out at about 7:00 AM and hiked to the second turn. On the way out we had a White-tailed Kite about 3/4 of the way to the first water control structure, and then the continuing Tropical Kingbird showed nicely at the first turn. About halfway to the second turn there was a Least Flycatcher actively calling and showing. Finally, we had brief but definitive looks at the continuing Vermilion Flycatcher on the powerlines near the second turn.

On the way back we had the biggest surprise when we heard a Dickcissel calling from among a mixed flock of buntings. Was able to get a shot before it disappeared; posted in the ebird checklist linked below.

We also went to C11-E where Carlos recently reported up to four Brown-crested Flycatchers. The winds were really gusting by this time so the hike produced nothing, but when we got back to the car there was a Brown-crested Flycatcher calling from the hammock along side 9336, in with a mixed flock of songbirds.

Unfortunately, the 4-5 trips past the American Pipit location yielded no Pipits for us!

Good birding!
Corey Callaghan
