We are definitely not trying to steal Toe's thunder with his imminent pelagic adventures but it is a total coincidence that, after a year of planning, we in Palm Beach County are making the following announcement.

Rick

Audubon Society of the Everglades Pelagic trip!

You've thought about it, you've talked about it, and we've planned it. The ASE Pelagic birding trip!

The word "pelagic" is derived from the Greek word pélagos meaning "open sea".

A pelagic trip is one done traveling by boat offshore to view seabirds which rarely come ashore except to breed. Seabird (pelagic) species include Gannets, Storm-Petrels, Shearwaters, Tropicbirds, others not usually in South Florida, as well as some Gulls and Terns.

Some of you may be aware of pelagic trips offered out of Miami, Ponce Inlet, Titusville, North Carolina or other areas. With the possible exception of North Carolina, trips from other locations have to travel much farther offshore to get to the Gulf Stream than we do here in Palm Beach County, hence the interest in a trip from our local area.

This could be a life trip for some or another great experience for others who have done pelagics in other parts of the country/world!

The details:

After speaking with several boat operators, we have narrowed it down to two possible boats to charter out of Lantana, FL. One boat can accommodate 20 participants, and another can handle 40.

The trip will be on Thursday April 16 taking the place of the April "2nd Thursday Leader's Choice" field trip.

The price per person will be $75 for the trip. If you've never been on a pelagic trip, this is a really good price!

We already have a minimum of 15 commitments for the smaller boat to book the trip. With 30 people committed for the trip, we will go for the larger boat.

This is where you come in.

If you are interested in joining us on a Pelagic Trip out of Palm Beach County, please:

· Send an email to asetripinfo@gmail.com

· Put "Pelagic Trip" in the subject line

We need an absolute commitment for 30 people to move forward to charter the larger boat.

After the trip is booked, refunds would only be given if the charter-boat operators cancel the trip due to weather and/or seas.
