My last assigned task for the Great Backyard Bird Count took me to the Rocky Glades Small Game Hunting Area, more readily known as the Sparrow Fields. I arrived before dawn in hopes of picking up owls, but a thick fog prevented me from finding any this morning.

From the small parking area along the west side of the canal, I walked the levee past the water control structure as it turned towards a southwest direction for about 2,000 feet. The berm then makes a soft right and goes due west. It is around here that the sparrow diversity was best (with White-crowned and Clay-colored). From there, I continued west until the levee makes a sharp turn to the south and turned around. Activity slowed down abruptly around 8:30.
