As far as the squirrel scent goes, birds actually have a fairly poor sense of smell. So, if you succeed on keeping the squirrel out, his lingering scent would probably not deter the woodpeckers.
I would lean towards not treating your new nestbox. The chemicals might not be good for the birds, and I doubt they mind the light color, although I do not have much experience with this. Maybe you could place the new nestbox near the other one and the redbellies will take to the new one and the squirrel can still have his sleeping place. Good luck.
