I tried for the Ani twice this week, on Thur afternoon and Fri morning (Feb 5/6). I missed it and sorely wish I could have tried last week when it was apparently much easier. Conditions were not great Thur afternoon (quite windy; very quiet in terms of bird vocalizations from passerines until just before sunset). However, yesterday morning it was great - very birdy with lots of vocalizations from essentially all passerine species present, but the Ani just wasn't here.

Thursday I started at the welcome sign and moved south slowly and methodically scouring every bush in view, going as far as the pond (~0.8 miles), then tried looking north of the sign for about a half mile. Then I repeated but went much farther south (a couple miles), and looked (by car only farther north. Finally at about 5:15 I waited in the vicinity of the sign til just before 6.

Not convinced, I decided to try again in the morning knowing resident birds in S Fl tend to be more active then. They were, but there was no sign of the Ani.

I had 47 spp Thur and 47 Fri (in 85 min), total for both days was 56 species for the site. A nice birding spot but sure wish I had been able to try a week ago.
