Elsa Alvear and I birded the road south of the Everglades Chekika Unit that Carlos Sanchez "discovered" yesterday. While a name for the location is fleshed out, I have dubbed it Hainlin Mill Drive for the time being. The area is packed with birds, and it looks like there is much more to be discovered here, with several roads running perpendicular to Hainlin Mill Drive/SW 216 Street. For those still grieving over the loss of access to the secondary growth east of Lucky Hammock, this new spot should help you get over it.

Dickcissel 1 Found on 1/31 by Carlos Sanchez. Larger in size to nearby buntings, but with stockier build and thicker bill. Yellowish wash to the breast and with soft brown tones on flanks and bellow. Mostly gray-brown back with some streaking on the back. Yellow tone on supercilium and lores. White throat and malar contrasting with a fine but noticeable lateral throat stripe. *There may be a second bird. After seeing the bird fly from a tall exposed reed, we heard the rather distinctive call of a Dickcissel from vegetation about 200 feet from where it appeared the confirmed bird had landed.
Red-winged Blackbird 475 Mostly large flocks flying overhead.
Eastern Meadowlark 12
Boat-tailed Grackle 1
passerine sp. 25 Birds flushed by swamp buggy just south of road. Most were probably Palm Warblers and sparrows.

While we were searching for the Dickcissel, two gentleman on a swamp buggy were searching for wild pigs in the adjacent property to the south. They were especially interested a leucistic/partially leucistic Turkey Vulture that one of them photographed nearby.
