Rangel Diaz, Cate Gelston and I paid a visit to Fairchild Tropical Gardens this morning in hopes of finding a rare hummingbird. We would not find that hummigbird today, but we did kick up a Swainson's Warbler in the native butterfly garden. It was first seen in the dense understory behind the thatch-covered chickee before it was photographed from the paved trail that runs through the butterfly garden. This is of course not to be confused with the exotic butterfly enclosure. The Swainson's was associating with an Ovenbird.

We noticed an influx of male Northern Parulas - they are already migrating. As we left, the Red-headed Agamas began coming out of the woodwork.

Before heading to Fairchild, we met at Matheson Hammock west of Old Cutler Road. We were able to track down the Red-headed Woodpecker once we distanced ourselves from the cacophony of Red-masked and Yellow-chevroned Parakeets and dozens of Orange-winged Parrots.

Red-headed Woodpecker 1 The target species of this outing. A continuing bird. Very striking "blood red" head with black back save for white trailing edge of secondaries. White belly. Detected by vocalization near the resident police officer's residence.
Red-bellied Woodpecker 3
American Kestrel 1
Yellow-chevroned Parakeet 24 This is not a terribly large number for this location.
Orange-winged Parrot 38 Large parrots with short tails. Quick wingbeats. Yellow above eye and cheek with light blue mask. Lack of red in underwing coverts eliminate somewhat similar Blue-fronted.
Red-masked Parakeet 34 Juveniles and adults. Juvies had red knob above the bill along with red speckling on shoulders and breast. Some red coming in on underwing coverts. Observers here should be careful to not confuse juvenile RMPA with other parakeets (Mitred, White-eyed, etc.). Adults had extensive red on faces and underwing coverts.
