The actual nomenclature changes, of course: Herring Gull will become Greatest Herring Gull (including subspecific European Greatest Herring Gull) Thayer's will be Greater Herring Gull, Vega-type will become Great Herring Gull, California Gull will become Lesser Herring Gull, and Glaucous Gull will become Least Herring Gull.
Herring x Thayer's hybrids will become "Slightly Less Than Greatest Herring Gull". California x Herring Gulls will become "Greater Than Lesser Herring Gull", and of course Herring x Glaucous will become "Greatest Least Herring Gull".
This should make gull identification much more straightforward...
