Last Friday morning between 6.30 and 6.40 I observed five Lesser Night-hawks hawking for insects over Eco Pond. They provided excellent views from the open shoreline across from the entrance. They disappeared sharply when it got too light. Sunrise on Friday was 7.10, so 40 minutes before sunrise seems to be the magic number. If folks are trying for these wintering western nighthawks then please avoid the use of torches to find your way in the dark. It may spook the birds and ruin your chances of seeing them.
