Thirty-four birders participated in the Coot Bay/Everglades National Park Christmas Bird Count on January 3. A total of 48,985 individuals of 125 species were tallied during the count. Lesser Nighthawk and Eastern Whip-poor-will were added during count week. Unusual species included Canvasback, Bufflehead, Brown-crested Flycatcher, Blue-winged Warbler and Summer Tanager. Amazing numbers of Lesser Scaup and American Coot (appropriately) were found this year on Coot Bay.

A film crew joined us for this year s count; they are working on a PBS mini-series called The Crowd and the Cloud, which will focus on the role of technology in citizen science. The host of the series is Dr. Waleed Abdalati, a University of Colorado scientist and former chief scientist of NASA. Dr. Abdalati and the crew followed Angel and Mariel Abreu on a very muddy Coastal Prairie Trail and later met up with Paul Bithorn and Joe Barros, who were covering Coot Bay by canoe. The mini-series is scheduled for broadcast sometime in 2016.
