Although it seemed a bit slow at first, the C-357 Sparrow Fields had a rich and interesting variety of birds this morning.
Eastern Towhee (4), Clay-colored Sparrow (3), Swamp Sparrow (14), Lincoln's Sparrow (4), and White-crowned Sparrow (4) were present all along the first mile or so of elevated berm -- often in multiples in the same binocular view. Savannah (3) and Grasshopper Sparrow (2) numbers were really down and restricted to the driest patches of vegetation over a mile from the start of the trail. Together, I tallied seven sparrow species at the Sparrow Fields this morning as well as both several of both Indigo and Painted Bunting.
Unusual sightings for this location included an Ovenbird and two Ruby-throated Hummingbirds out in the tall grass, far removed from any trees or woody bushes.
