Despite the ominous-looking skies, 17.5 people (I'm counting the baby in the backpack as .5) joined me this morning for what turned out to be a really pleasant and fruitful (birdful?) walk. The few short-lived showers turned into a glorious double rainbow and, when all was said and done, we had recorded a total of 54 species.
Our first bird of the day was the juvenile Broad-winged hawk , which was joined a few minutes later by a mature adult. The birding along the boardwalk was a bit slow, but picked up when we returned to the parking lot and along the perimeter road. All 5 regular woodpecker species were seen (1 YB Sapsucker, 5 N Flicker, 3 Pileated, 3 Downy and numerous Red-bellied), as well as 7 warblers (Palm, Pine, Prairie, B&W, N Parula, Yellow-rumped and Orange-crowned). Those who went out on the perimeter road had great looks at the Great Horned Owl and decent views of the Nandays. No Robins or Waxwings yet at TC, even though a couple hundred Robins were spotted less than 5 miles away yesterday.
The complete Ebird checklist is at the link below.
The next walk will be held on Sunday, February 8 at 7:30 AM. I hope you will join us.
