Hey all,
We had a wonderful group of 19 birders for the TAS Everglades National Park Birding walk on Saturday 1/10. The day started off foggy and gray, but that quickly changed with blue skies and comfortable temps by 10a.m.
We birded our way from Lucky Hammock to Flamingo with a few stops along the way. The highlight of the day was at the Flamingo Visitor Center where we found not one, but two American Flamingos for the group. We also had a Brown-crested Flycatcher just beyond the park entrance and Brian scored another rarity at Coot Bay Pond Eurasian Wigeon! Other birds of note, Hooded Merganser, Short-tailed Hawk, Purple Gallinule, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Great Horned Owl and Brown-headed Nuthatch.
We first saw the flamingos at about 4:10pm on a rising tide. If chasing these birds, we would plan to be at the Flamingo Visitor Center by low tide and hope for the best. As the tide turns, birds often begin to appear at the mud flat opposite the visitor center as other flats begin to disappear with the rising tide.
The mud flat was mega-extensive on Saturday, much larger than usual. The birds came in as the flat began to disappear, they moved east as the tide continued to rise and remained on the last patch of exposed flat by the time we left, which was at about 5:20pm.
Good luck to anyone chasin' and thanks to all that made it out to this wonderful yearly walk! We always have a great time :)
Nature is Awesome
