After starting the year right with the Key West Quail-Dove along with a great bunch of the South Florida birding community, I went over to Cutler Wetlands.

At first glance, there is not much going on but appearances can be deceiving. A couple of Northern Harriers flushed a large flock of birds hiding in the reeds, including both Blue-winged and Green-winged Teal, Northern Shoveler, and Gadwall.

Looking to the east in the deep artificial lake beyond the swales, I had a Red-breasted Merganser and two Bonaparte's Gulls.

In the small "faux" hammock to the north of the lake (look for the tall Australian Pine), I had 10 species of warbler at the little cul-de-sac. Yellow and Magnolia Warbler were the two most noteworthy species.

I had 50 species in just a little over an hour of birding at Cutler Wetlands -- take note of this for all participants in the Miami Birding Wave Urban Big Day event! I have supplied a link to my eBird list below.

Happy New Year!

Carlos
