For the next Miami Birding Wave challenge, we want to get the new year rolling with a Miami Big Day. A big day, for those unfamiliar with the event, is where an individual or a group of birders seek to hear or see as many bird species in a calender day.

After seeing the December eBird blitz results and Kendall and Miami CBC results, we are certain that 100 species in Miami is attainable. Hit our passerine-rich suburban and urban parks for warblers and other passerines, Crandon Park for shorebirds, Biscayne Bay for gulls, terns, and perhaps loons, Horned Grebes, and scoters.

This is a Miami Big Day, meaning that we are leaving out the Everglades and the surrounding agricultural areas. Boundaries: anywhere in Miami-Dade EAST of Krome Avenue is fair game. The northern boundary is obviously the Broward County line, and the southern boundary is the Monroe County line.

We are only counting ABA "countable" species, meaning that some exotic species with populations deemed non-countable will not be counted (such as Mitred Parakeets and Hill Mynas). Consult the ABA Checklist that was updated in September 2014 for acceptable species (http://listing.aba.org/aba-checklist/).

You are welcome to do as many big days as you can in the month of January, and submit your results with a short summary to us. We encourage you to eBird any of your sightings and especially post to the TAS board. At the end of the month, we will compile our lists and count up the number of species collectively seen.

There is a lot of strategy involved in executing a Big Day, so go stake out good local birds, figure out the your routes and get out there.
