Numbers of warblers are definitely trending upward in CBCs, but so is the half hardy Blue-headed Vireo -- a bird that winters in large numbers throughout the southeast such as Louisiana and Georgia.
Our team covered a lot more parks and warbler rich neighborhoods this year. Many of these sites had never been covered before. The extra coverage gave us an opportunity to better document the warbler diversity in suburban Kendall we already knew was here. It's the tip of the iceberg. There are still hundreds of tree-lined streets that remained uncovered.
The Kendall CBC actually recorded good waterfowl diversity yesterday. Hermit Thrush has never been recorded on a Kendall CBC. Chipping Sparrow has only been recorded once (2013). American Robin has only been recorded twice (2004, 2012).
Christmas Bird Count data is available online for those who want to browse the information. By browsing past CBC data, you can glean some really interesting information on bird populations in Miami-Dade in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s.
