Making a stronger effort to bird my neighborhood this winter, I've began cruising the well-vegetated streets of Miami Shores by road bike. It was a a rather slow morning overall with lower numbers of passerines than usual, a Rufous Hummingbird made up for it all. An ebird list follows:

Miami Shores, Miami-Dade, US-FL
Dec 18, 2014 8:26 AM - 10:15 AM
Protocol: Traveling
2.7 mile(s)
Comments: Birding was done on a bicycle. I slowly meandered streets in a residential area listening for passerines. I covered a lot of ground on a bike, but surely missed birds more easily seen while birding on foot. Bird activity dropped quickly around 9:45.

Rufous Hummingbird 1 Female type bullying two Ruby-throated Hummingbird. The bird gave itself away with a series of chase calls, chip calls, and buzzy notes. The bird had rufous undertail coverts and flanks and a greenish crown. The bill appeared more straight and shorter by proportion to body length compared to nearby Ruby-throated Hummingbirds. Allen's Hummingbird has not (and probably won't be) ruled out, but Rufous is far more common in Florida and the Southeast during the winter months. The bird was in a flowering orchid tree on the northeast corner of NE 100 Street and NE 5th Avenue.
