Hi Bill,
I saw a Hornbill yesterday (3/7/06) in Davie, Florida. I couldn't believe my eyes as it flew over me in a residential area. I've seen Hornbills in Africa so I'm pretty sure that's what it was. I was so intrigued that I went on-line for information and found this link. Is there a breeding population in South Florida and is the bird I saw likely to be the same species that you mentioned?
Regards,
Mike

: Hi Janine,
:
: Great pic! Your bird is a Silvery-cheeked Hornbill (Ceratogymna brevis), a bird photographed in Florida only once before.
:
: The previous record was from the Deering Estate at Miami on 13 Oct 2004 (http://www.tropicalaudubon.org/tasboard/messages/6770.html) with a photo at (http://www.tropicalaudubon.org/tasboard/messages/6783.html). There are other observations of Silvery-cheeked Hornbill in Florida, all from Miami-Dade County.

: Thanks for sharing your photo.
