What are the chances of this bird making it back on its own if released here? Probably not very high. However, here are some questions to consider:

1) Where did it come from? This species has a pretty extensive range, from BC to N. Mexico during breeding. How do we know where to send it back to?

2) If released here, will it be able to get back on its own? While it made it here on its own, it doesn't belong here, so maybe it doesn't know how to get back. If it did, why did it end up here in the firt place.

3) How long can it be kept here after it's recovered, assuming it does? Can we really wait till spring to release it?

4) Where was it going? It winters from Mexico to El Salvador, so was it heading there when it ended up here?

I think we need to do what's in the best interest of the bird, so these are valid questions that perhaps someone with more experienc with this specis can answer.
