For the Miami Birding Wave s first push, participants got out there and birded our local parks. A good effort was made to turn over stones and find wintering and resident birds. Participants spread out well; Matheson Hammock, A.D. Barnes, Larry and Penny Thompson, Kendall Indian Hammocks, Chapman Field, R. Hardy Matheson, Bill Baggs Cape Florida, Crandon Park, and Virginia Key Ecosystem Restoration Area were all covered.

A couple of surprises were found: Hermit Thrush, Yellow-breasted Chat, and Grasshopper Sparrow are all difficult to find within the metropolitan area.

Raul "Rock Jetty" Urgelles managed to add Yellow-breasted Chat to the ebird's checklist for Chapman Field Park, and Robin Diaz tallied the most species at a hotpot (by a non-organizer) with 59 species at Virginia Key Environmental Restoration Area.

With the holidays and Christmas Bird Counts coming up later this month, we will wait until the new year for the next event. With the amount of birds seen just at Matheson Hammock this weekend during the blitz, it dawned on us that getting one-hundred species in the Miami metropolitan area is feasible. We have the feeling that this will be the next challenge. Stay tuned.

A checklist or two may trickle in tonight or tomorrow, so a comprehensive list will have to wait.
