Hey all,
We have a couple folks on board for our first ebird blitz this weekend.
Again, to summarize this particular blitz, it is an effort by the birding community to thoroughly bird our urban and suburban parks and public areas in the Miami metropolitan area. We are trying to get a better idea of what is wintering in our own neighborhoods, as well as find any unusual species. There are a few simple guidelines and even a bit of a challenge. In a post by Carlos Sanchez regarding the blitz, he writes:
"In the spirit of the upcoming Christmas Bird Count season, we will be offering two categories in hopes that it will complement that event as much as possible. Both categories involve selecting an established eBird hotspot -- of which there are many in Miami-Dade. Lists that include all of Everglades National Park will be disqualified.
Category 1: Who can add the most species to the cumulative eBird list for a particular hotspot? The best strategy is to select an eBird hotspot which has very few checklists. Many of these sites have the potential to harbor many more species than eBird currently shows. Examples include Larry and Penny Thompson Park, Chapman Field Park, and Oleta River State Park.
Category 2: Who can see the most species at a particular eBird hotspot? Instead of visiting several sites through the course of a morning, this category encourages birders to really explore an eBird hotspot thoroughly to tease out as many bird species as possible. Birding at Bill Baggs State Park or Matheson Hammock County Park can still pay off if you really scour the park for a high overall list."
Once you have entered your findings into ebird, send me your list automatically generated after an ebird submission. To do this, simply email yourself the checklist from your outings/outings and then forward that email to me at alexkharper@gmail.com.
A comprehensive report on our blitz will follow. If you have any questions, send an email to me (alexkharper@gmail.com) or Carlos Sanchez (tsunamicarlos@gmail.com). We look forward to your participation and to see what turns up.
Best,
~Alex~
