Yes, there is something to be said about the comparison between time periods. I tried to be as standard as possible by using temps for Miami proper. Rural areas are always colder, and earlier in the century there was a lot more rural area than today.

As for cold months, Jan '77 was the coldest I can remember from my experience. Temps in Miami were below 40 on 6 days, with the coldest being 31 deg on the 20th and 21st. There were 13 days that month where the low hit below 50 deg. This is for the stations in Miami, rural areas had colder temps still. I was living in Hialeah where I believe the low reached 28 or 29 deg. We had ice on everything in our yard that was wet the night before. I had a basketball with a huge chunk of ice on it, and my mom's car had a thick layer of ice covering it.

If we look at the national forecast for the next couple of weeks, though, it appears the entire country is having a warmer than usual December.
