This Thanksgiving weekend I was able to get out to both Green Cay and Wakodahatchee Wetlands on Thu, Fri, and Sat. Other than blue-winged teal and mottled, it's been almost duckless at both parks, but on the first two days there was one lone American Widgeon hanging among all the coots. On Saturday, a green-winged teal arrived at Green Cay. I spotted American Bittern at both parks. Small bird activity was very good at both locations - dozens if not hundreds of pine warblers all over the parking lot at Green Cay, plus prairie, palm, yellow-rumped, yellow-throated warblers, northern parula, blue-headed vireo among those I spotted. Painted buntings are more numerous than I can recall in past seasons - at least 12 were hanging around the two entrance feeders. Ovenbirds have been ubiquitous below the feeders as well. Raptor activity has been up at Green Cay - 3-4 red-shoulders chasing about, two coopers, one of what I believe was a broad-winged (still need to ID that one from the photos), an active kestrel is back, and at least one northern harrier has returned.
Yesterday at Wakodahatchee, the warbler/vireo army was passing through the tree canopy area - the same list of warblers and vireo I noted above at Green Cay were all present at Wako - plus one possible Cape May (still need to ID) and lots of yellow-rumped and prairie, less pine. Haven't spotted the neotropical cormorant the past two weeks - don't know if they decided not to nest, or moved to a different location I haven't spotted yet - the central island location that the one sat at for several weeks in a row is empty.
