I braved the choppy waves and took the surfboard out to Deerfield Beach this morning (just south of the pier) and had several flocks of Red-breasted Mergansers heading south. Flocks ranged between 10 and 35. Some flocks of ducks farther offshore could not be identified, so scoters could also have sneaking by.
Northern Gannets, Ring-billed, Lesser Black-backed and Herring Gulls pushed southbound as well.
In Miami-Dade County, some of the best seawatching can be done from South Pointe Park on South Beach. It could be worth getting out there soon; scoters and occasionally jaegers can be seen from shore during the right conditions.
