Marco Island Carpool Trip

Five birders attended today's carpool trip to Marco Island, in which 93 species were seen. Rain showers lasted until mid-morning. Avian highlights include:

At Doc Thomas House: Eastern Screech Owl (heard)

At the abandoned airboat concession one mile west of Shark Valley: several Snail Kites

At Kirby Storter Wayside: Wild Turkey (two females roosting in cypress trees at the end of the boardwalk), Wood Stork, Downy and Pileated Woodpecker, Great Crested Flycatcher, Blue-headed Vireo, American Crow (on a nest), Tufted Titmouse, Carolina Wren (heard), Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Northern Parula, Yellow-rumped, Black-throated Green, Yellow-throated, Pine, Prairie, Palm and Black-and-white Warbler, Northern Waterthrush (heard), Common Yellowthroat, Savannah Sparrow and Eastern Meadowlark (heard)

Along Tamiami Trail west of SR 29: Mottled Duck, Blue-winged Teal, Green-winged Teal, Glossy Ibis, Roseate Spoonbill

At Big Cypress Bend Boardwalk, Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park: Black-crowned Night-Heron, Wood Stork, Barred Owl (including two youngsters), Downy and Pileated Woodpecker, Northern Flicker, Eastern Phoebe, Great Crested Flycatcher, White-eyed Vireo, Blue-headed Vireo, Tufted Titmouse, Carolina Wren, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Northern Parula, Yellow-rumped, Yellow-throated, Prairie and Black-and-white Warbler, American Redstart, Common Yellowthroat

Near Fritchey Road wetlands: Western Kingbird

At Eagle Lakes Community Park: Mallard (feral), Mottled Duck, Blue-winged Teal, Glossy Ibis, Bald Eagle, Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, Loggerhead Shrike

At Rookery Bay Environmental Learning Center: Yellow-crowned Night-Heron, Common Ground-Dove

At the former Briggs Nature Center: Bald Eagle, Eastern Towhee

At Tigertail Beach: Black-bellied, Wilson's, Semipalmated and Piping Plover, American Oystercatcher, Willet, Ruddy Turnstone, Sanderling, Western Sandpiper, Least Sandpiper, Dunlin, Short-billed Dowitcher, Burrowing Owl (on Kendall Drive near Tigertail)
