This morning at around 10 a.m. I saw a Smooth-billed Ani in the new restoration area south of the Research Road and east of the Dan Beard Center in Everglades National Park. It was in the scrubby vegetation across a shallow stretch of water opposite the northwest corner of the restoration mound. The bird was initially secretive, skulking in the underbrush, but eventually it came up high in a shrub for a good look. There were also lots of shorebirds (mainly yellowlegs & killdeers) and quite a few raptors in the same area.
