Good afternoon,
On a related note, Julie Cocke of Jacksonville posted the following message to another listserve: --http://www.lists.ufl.edu./cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0602d&L=floridabirds-l&D=1&O=D&P=76--
"I've been reviewing the Jax results re. the Great Backyard Bird Count, and I am amazed at a couple of species. There were 72 checklists reported from Jacksonville, with a grand total of 5 Ruby-crowned Kinglets! These little guys are classified as "common" here during the winter. I reported 3, so I guess that means only 2 more were counted.
Ditto on Blue-gray Gnatcatcher. Also, I reported apparently the only Orange-crowned Warbler in the county. Are we simply missing out on these species or are they just not around? I recognize they are perhaps a bit more difficult to observe than a Pileated (which we reported 15), but the numbers do seem extremely low. Any ideas?
Also, I'd love knowing where the following Jax species were reported from:
Ruby-throated Hummingbird
Great Crested Flycatcher
Summer Tanager
Baltimore Oriole (I had 5)"
Best regards,
Bill Pranty
