I visited the Big Cypress Swamp last Saturday hiking the Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge trails and Jones Grade in Fakahatchee Strand State Park. There was a nice mix of migrants but the most exiting sighting was a Blue-striped Spreadwing at Florida Panther NWR, it is a tropical damselfly found in the United States only in south Florida and extreme southern Texas. At Florida Panther NWR the short loop was dry but the longer loop through the pine flatwoods had ankle deep water in places and Jones Grade had calf deep water flowing over the road about a third of the way out. The highlights of the trip home via Oil Well Road working back to Snake Road were Sandhill Cranes and a Snail Kite in Collier County and a Peregrine Falcon in Hendry County.
