Usually, southeasterly winds are not the best for observing good numbers of passage migrants in southern Florida. Nonetheless, Matheson Hammock still had an interesting variety of birds distributed throughout the park in an interesting way. Food for thought: Yellow-throated and Prairie Warbler were the only warbler species found in the mangroves. Interestingly, the Prairie Warblers in the mangroves were all in male-female pairs evenly spaced along this habitat, while those found in the tropical hardwood hammock came in ones and twos of random gender.

The tropical hardwood hammock had a good assortment of warblers (10 species) with Black-throated Blue Warbler being by far the most numerous species. The 'best' bird of the day was a Chestnut-sided Warbler in the picnic area near the north entrance.
