The first of the monthly bird walks at Tall Cypress got off to a respectable start today , with the group recording 51 species. Some of the group who arrived early saw a couple of Paul's Coral Springs nighthawks fly over before I arrived (I just got a flock of about 100 - seemingly purposeless - Fish Crows as I was leaving the house). The highlight of the walk occured only about 50 feet onto the boardwalk, when we encountered the curious grouping of 11 Eastern Kingbirds, a Baltimore Oriole and a Summer Tanager in a small dead tree - a "sticky snag" as Barbara DeWitt delightfully described it - just off to the left side of the BW.
The Great Horned Owl showed just half of its head and one 'ear' tuft on the first part of the walk, though we all got great views of it later on in the second segment. No 'big numbers' of migrants, but a nice selection of things:

Warblers - Ovenbird, Worm Eating, Northern Parula, Yellow-throated, Black & White, American Redstart, Prairie and FOS Black-throated Blue. Unfortunately, we dipped on the Swainson's Warbler I had seen earlier in the week.

Other notable FOS species: Merlin, Baltimore Oriole, Summer Tanager.

See link below for the complete checklist on Ebird.

The next walk is scheduled for Sunday, Oct 12. I hope to see you there!
