So I was taking a nap when my mom starts banging on my window for me to come outside. She wanted to show me what turned out to be a very handsome male American redstart. I pished hoping it would come in closer so my mom and sister could get a good look, but the pishing brought in a flock of several more warblers from a nearby live oak. On the first bird I looked at I could see a black bib and ear patch. I was still dazed and thought I was probably hallucinating but ran inside like a madman anyway to get my camera and began frantically searching for the bird again. Finally, I got a few shots of the bird, a fantastic male golden-winged warbler. I've only seen this bird once before, while deliberately searching for it, at a spot in central Pennsylvania which is one of the few places where it still breeds in the state.
I don't have a flickr or photobucket account, but I'm going to post the pictures on facebook and will gladly email them if anyone is interested. What a great yard bird! Mom is absolved of any wrong-doing.
Other birds in the flock included black-and-white warbler, yellow-throated warbler, prairie warbler, northern parula, and blue-gray gnatcatcher.
